Thunderous Start Nets Another Draw

The Sioux Falls Thunder drew in their rematch against Joy Athletic Club on Wednesday, July 6. The game in St. Louis Park finished 1-1 under the stadium lights.

The first good chance of the game fell to the Thunder, and what a chance it was. Controlled play from the midfield led to a 3-on-3 on the Joy goal, and a nice cross from Tyler Limmer fell at James Bolger's feet. One clinical finish from Bolger later and the Thunder were up 1-0.

The Thunder continued to control the play, knocking the ball around in their own half and looking for more chances after dispossessing Joy. But all other Thunder opportunities fizzled out near the box, and Joy's returning chances were quickly snuffed out by the Thunder defense. The half would close with the score still at 1-0.

The second half opened with Joy's best chance for a goal. A foul led to a free kick from 40 yards, but the crossed ball landed in Ezekiel Foltz's arms. But this set piece chance would be foreshadowing for the end of the second half. Two corner kicks in a row in the 89th minute saw a desperate Joy player fall in the box. With no VAR to verify the flagrant flop, the referee pointed to the spot. Despite Foltz's track record, he couldn't keep the penalty kick out of the net, and the game would close 1-1.

The Thunder will play their last home game this Saturday, July 9th at 7 pm in Sioux Falls against the Minnesota Twin Stars before playing their last game of the season away against Duluth the following week on Friday, July 15..
