The Sioux Falls Thunder (2-5-1) lost to undefeated Minneapolis City (8-0-0) away on Saturday, June 19. The game was level for 45 minutes, but a deluge of goals closed the score 0-5 in favor of the Crows.
Minneapolis City opened strong, getting a corner kick just 4 minutes in. They were unable to deliver, and the Thunder created their first chance of the game in the 8th minute. A shot by Stevenson Storm at a hard angle forced City keeper Troy Louwagie to deflect it back into the box. The ball fell at the feet of Natinael Ayalew, who was unable to untangle it from the City defenders.
City kept up the pressure, producing several chances including a ball dropped at forward Will Kidd’s feet just in front of Thunder keeper Federico Simonetti, which was stopped by an offsides call in the 22nd minute. Thirteen minutes of passive play from both sides was bookended by City corners in the 24th and 37th minute. Both resulting City shots were sent over the bar and through the field goal.
Frantic play resumed with three minutes before halftime. A City cross was blocked by Bigirimana Omari, one of many shots and passes stopped from him. The ball was knocked out by Simonetti and cleared. Storm gave chase, and his speed put him past the City back line. Louwagie managed to stop the initial attempt, and Storm sent the rebound just wide.
City steeled their nerves and scored the first goal of the game in the first few seconds of stoppage time. Lionel Vang made a slicing run and collected a pass from Max Stiegwardt. Vang tucked it past Simonetti to make it 0-1 for City at the break.
7 minutes after halftime Brayan Lopez was able to take advantage of chaos in the box for City, as the unmarked forward seized his chance and netted the second goal of the game. City would go on to score three more in the second half, with two in just the last 8 minutes after reaching their substitute limit. The game finished 0-5 for Minneapolis City.
The Thunder will take a break from conference play this Saturday and head down to Lawrence, Kansas to face USL team Kaw Valley FC in an exhibition match on Saturday, June 26th, before returning to NPSL fixtures.
